Delhi power consumers with monthly usage of over 200 units are set to pay more after an 8% hike in the power purchase adjustment cost (PPAC). The move has prompted Delhi’s power minister, Atishi, to accuse the Centre of “mismanagement” and making electricity costlier for the city’s residents.
However, the hike will not affect consumers whose electricity consumption is 200 units or below, as the PPAC surcharge will only be increased in power bills of those consumers who do not receive subsidies. The PPAC is revised every three months and can increase or decrease depending on the prevailing prices of fuel such as coal and gas used in power generation.
Meanwhile, the BJP’s Delhi unit spokesperson, Harish Khurana, has blamed the hike on a “nexus” between the discoms and the AAP government. The people of Delhi receive free electricity on monthly consumption of 200 units, while those consuming 201-400 units receive a 50% subsidy.
