In move to decongest Delhi jails, over 1300 prison inmates to be awarded remission

As part of the Delhi Prisons Department’s efforts to decongest overcrowded jails in the capital, 1,387 inmates lodged at the Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini prisons will be awarded remission based on their good conduct and behavior inside the jail. This move was announced on Independence Day and aims to reduce the prison population and create a more manageable environment.

Earlier this year, the department had already announced that remission would be granted to inmates from the time they enter prison as undertrials. This step is in line with the government’s commitment to prison reform and ensuring that inmates have the opportunity for rehabilitation and a chance to rebuild their lives.

During his Independence Day address, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal emphasized the need to focus on providing essential services like electricity, better health facilities, and education to make India a world leader. He highlighted the recent incidents of violence in Manipur and Haryana, stating that speeches alone would not make the country progress.

Kejriwal stressed the importance of improving schools, education systems, and healthcare facilities to ensure the country’s development and growth. By addressing these fundamental needs, he believes that India can become a global leader and achieve the status it aspires to.
