Sitting in the ambulance that took her son’s shrouded body back to their home in Banda, Vidya Devi, 45, realized that her days spent sitting under the guava tree in her courtyard, waiting for her “Lalla” to come home, were now over.
On September 1, 21-year-old Anil Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, was found dead in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. Anil’s family received a call from IIT-Delhi informing them of his death, and they immediately traveled to Delhi to investigate the circumstances.
Anil’s mother, Vidya Devi, expressed disbelief at the idea that her son took his own life. She described Anil as a vibrant young man who loved playing cricket and caring for their goats. She couldn’t fathom that he would hang himself, especially when he had difficulty tying up a couple of goats.
Anil had faced academic struggles during his time at IIT-Delhi and had been given an extension by the college. His family was aware of this, but they didn’t believe it was a reason for him to take such a drastic step. Anil’s brother, Amit Kumar, who is the family’s sole earning member, borrowed money to hire an ambulance and travel to Delhi.
Upon reaching the campus, the family found Anil’s room locked from the outside, with blood on the floor visible through a window. Amit believes his brother was murdered, contrary to the initial police statement that suggested suicide. The family is determined to uncover the truth behind Anil’s death.
Anil’s academic journey started in his village of Anousa, where he displayed brilliance in mathematics from a young age. He attended a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) school, which provides education to meritorious students from rural areas. Anil’s family moved to Banda’s Rajeev Nagar when his father got a job there.
Anil’s passion for cricket helped him make friends, even though he was shy. He went on to clear the JNV entrance exam and received coaching for IITs through the Dakshana Foundation. Anil’s friends and teachers remember him as a quiet but bright student who excelled in mathematics.
Anil’s death comes just two months after another IIT-Delhi student, Ayush Ashna, died by suicide. Both Anil and Ayush belonged to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, raising concerns about the mental health support available to students from marginalized backgrounds.
Anil’s family, still grappling with the loss of their beloved son, refuses to accept that he took his own life. They continue to seek answers and justice for Anil, believing that there is more to his death than meets the eye.
