When it comes to expressways, Uttar Pradesh currently wears the crown with the highest number in the country. But Bihar is not far behind and is set to receive significant infrastructure upgrades.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed five new expressways for the state, and all have received the green light. Construction is expected to kick off soon, aiming to boost intra-state connectivity.
2,025 Kilometers of New Roads in the Pipeline
Under the NHAI proposal, Bihar will see the construction of a total of 2,025 kilometers of expressways. Currently, India boasts about 44 operational expressways, with over 10 under construction and proposals for 20 more.
Bihar’s five new expressways are part of this upcoming expansion, benefiting more than six districts in the state.
Connecting Three States: Two Major Expressways
Out of the five new expressways, three will link multiple states. The largest among them is the 650-kilometer Raxaul-Haldia Expressway, which will connect Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
This expressway will start from Raxaul in Bihar and stretch to Haldia in West Bengal. Additionally, the 607-kilometer Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway will traverse Bihar, connecting Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur to Siliguri in West Bengal.
Double Boost for Darbhanga
Darbhanga district in Bihar will be a major beneficiary with two new expressways. The first is the 189-kilometer Amritsar-Darbhanga Expressway.
The second is the 271-kilometer Aurangabad-Darbhanga Expressway. Combined, these will provide Darbhanga with 460 kilometers of new expressways.
Bihar to Host the Longest Intra-State Expressway
Bihar is also set to host its longest intra-state expressway, proposed between Buxar and Bhagalpur. This expressway will span approximately 308 kilometers, making it a significant addition to the state’s infrastructure. In total, these five new expressways will add over 2,000 kilometers of road network to Bihar.
