New UP Congress President Claims Rahul Gandhi Will Contest from Amethi in 2024 Lok Sabha Polls
Newly appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai has stated that Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, sparking discussions about the high-profile constituency that has long been a traditional seat for the Gandhi-Nehru family. The Amethi constituency has only witnessed a defeat for the Gandhi-Nehru family twice, with the first being after the Emergency when Sanjay Gandhi lost to Janata Party candidate Ravindra Pratap Singh.
Rahul Gandhi first entered Parliament from the Amethi constituency in 2004 and went on to win the next two Lok Sabha elections from the same seat. However, he lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019. Currently, Sonia Gandhi is the only Congress parliamentarian from UP, representing Rae Bareli. The Congress party aims to regain the Amethi seat from Smriti Irani.
Rahul Gandhi is currently an MP from Wayanad in Kerala.
Ajay Rai made the announcement about Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy in Amethi in the presence of party workers and leaders who gathered at the airport to welcome him. He also commented on Smriti Irani, saying she appears frustrated. Rai challenged Irani’s claims of providing subsidized sugar, asking the people of Amethi to verify if she had delivered on her promise.
Smriti Irani vs Rahul Gandhi
According to HT’s sister publication Live Hindustan, Smriti Irani’s active involvement in Amethi has strengthened the BJP’s presence in the region. While BJP legislators hold sway in Jagdishpur, Tiloi, and Salon assembly constituencies, the Samajwadi Party maintains its grip over Gauriganj and Amethi seats. Supporters of Smriti Irani in Amethi highlight the developmental work carried out by both the central and state governments.
Rahul Gandhi has visited Amethi three times since his defeat in the 2019 elections, keeping the hopes of local party leaders alive. His presence and efforts, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when he provided relief materials to the region, have resonated positively with local party workers. This indicates the possibility of a strong political battle in the Amethi constituency if Rahul Gandhi decides to contest from his former seat in the next Lok Sabha election.
