In a significant development for regional connectivity, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Muralidhar Mohol, announced on Monday that the central government plans to operationalize 12 new airports across eight states and union territories this year. This initiative is part of the Regional Air Connectivity Scheme.
Uttar Pradesh Gets Two New Airports
Highlighting the focus on Uttar Pradesh, the minister mentioned that Moradabad and Saharanpur will each see the establishment of a new airport. This is set to boost the state’s connectivity and economic prospects.
Expansion Under UDAN Scheme
In a written response to the Rajya Sabha, the minister explained that the current UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme has already activated 579 routes connecting 85 airports. The scheme aims to make air travel accessible and affordable for the common citizen.
List of New Airports
Apart from Moradabad and Saharanpur, the other new airports slated for commencement this year include Car Nicobar (Andaman and Nicobar), Ambikapur (Chhattisgarh), Rewa and Datia (Madhya Pradesh), Amravati and Solapur (Maharashtra), Daman (Daman and Diu), Ambala (Haryana), and Vellore and Neyveli (Tamil Nadu).
